Context · Problem

We had to build mobile communication and system software that works reliably on networks around the world.

Global field work

Tested, verified and fixed on site across the US, Poland, Guangzhou (China), India, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Carrier requirements

Development had to meet the requirements of each carrier, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint.

Role · Approach

Three periods, three kinds of depth

Role: Mobile communication protocol, system SW and SIM/eSIM development (C, Trace32)

  1. 01

    SIM & eSIM (2011–2014)

Owned Samsung's SIM and eSIM features globally. Led Samsung's first eSIM implementation with Sprint in the US and served as lead code reviewer for the SIM team.

  2. 02

    System SW (2008–2011)

Owned system SW for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Android phones, developed GPS drivers, and debugged memory on Samsung's first Android phones (Galaxy A, Galaxy S).

  3. 03

    Communication protocols (2005–2008)

Was a main owner of the global GSM module, developing RRM and E-GPRS and handling field testing, verification and fixes overseas end to end.

Impact

  • Led Samsung's first eSIM implementation with Sprint in the US
  • Debugged memory on Samsung's first Android phones (Galaxy A, Galaxy S)
  • Developed the global GSM module (RRM, E-GPRS), verified in the field in the US, Poland, China, India, Vietnam and Indonesia
  • Later became the foundation for turning complex technology — telecom, connectivity, IoT — into easy experiences as a UX designer
