Case 03 · Spatial IoT
CH.5 · Expanding the B2B spatial platformSamsung's First Digital Twin
Building and campus management
Built Samsung's first Digital Twin from 0 to 1, uniting building and campus operations and energy management around space.
Led it from 0 to launch, then handed it over — later growth came after the hand-over.

Context · Problem
The scattered operation and energy management of buildings and campuses needed one place to come together — around the space itself.
A first for Samsung
With no internal precedent, the need and the goals had to be defined from scratch.
Two values at once
Building operations and energy saving are different values that had to live in one experience.
Accuracy
Both management and energy saving only mean something if they match real spatial data.
Role · Approach
Beyond designer, as UX PM — deciding what to build, why and when
Role: UX PM (PRD, goals, priorities and schedule) and UI/UX design lead
- 01
Finding the need, setting goals
As UX PM, identified the need for a Digital Twin and wrote the PRD to set its goals.
- 02
Priorities and schedule
Ranked features by importance and planned the development schedule around them.
- 03
Design criteria
Set design criteria aimed at more accurate building management and energy saving.
- 04
Hand-over after launch
After taking it to launch, handed the solution over to a colleague for company-wide rollout.
Key Design
Spatial view × energy-saving solution
- 1
A spatial Digital Twin view
Put a view that shows buildings and campuses as they are at the center of operations.
- 2
Combined with energy saving
Completed a UX/UI that combines the spatial view with the energy-saving solution to get the most out of both.
- 3
Built to scale
Grew into a solution that started at one site and spread to many sites and buildings.
Impact

- IDEA 2025IDEA Design Award, Silver
- Piloted at Samsung sites in Vietnam and Poland, then expanded company-wide
- Applied to domestic R&D buildings and used in overseas sales
- Rolling out to all Samsung Electronics sites in Korea
- Presented in the CES 2024 VIP room
- Factorial Seongsu, running Samsung b.IoT, became Korea's first building to earn WiredScore SmartScore Gold, a global smart-building certification (2026.01) — b.IoT operation cut cooling/HVAC energy use by about 27% (2025.06.01–09.30, per a Pukyong National University study)
